The National Blue Ribbon School Program is a reward system that honors schools with students that have achieved high performing levels. The Blue Ribbon Program reaches out to students from both public and private elementary, middle and high schools. Part of an effort by the U.S. Department of Education, the Blue Ribbon program is especially directed to award disadvantaged students. It was designed to identify and unveil knowledge about the best school leadership and identify which teaching practices work best.
The program was created in 1981, specifically to honor schools that achieve high performance levels and significant improvements, focusing specifically on disadvantaged students. To be selected for the National Blue Ribbon School Program, a school must first conduct a self -evaluation. This process allows teachers, students, parents, and community representatives to analyze the school’s strengths and weaknesses to better plan for the future. Schools are then able to submit a written application. The application must include information on the school’s progress toward achieving the National Education Goals. Schools applying for the honor then enter a multi-step review process to be chosen as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Final section for the National Blue Ribbon program is made by the U.S. Department of Education.
