I’ll bet as a parent you already enjoy sitting with your child and helping them learn to read. Things like putting puzzles together or just going to some new place and experiencing the adventure together.
As a home schooling parent you can determine the method that suits them best. As opposed to Public School where every child gets the cookie cutter program. Should you really desire to homeschool your child you will be able to be their teacher. The education of your child is your responsibility.
Just a short note about our experience with our youngest son. John (not his true name) had a lot of problems learning to read in 1st and 2nd grade. I believe my wife and I were in school almost as much as John. John was not a behaviour problem and was voted Mr. Congeniality (imagine that in grade school) by his class. He just behaved was ignored and flunked.
Yes, John flunked 1sr grade and had to repeat and then flunked 2nd grade and had to repeat that also. It was total exasperation for my wife and I. Needless to say John did not grow up with a lot of self esteem. He bungled along until 10th grade and left school. In his ninth year one of his teachers said to my wife and I at a school meeting, “John has sure come a long way considering his dyslexia”. Nice news to finally get.
My point here is even though John overcame with a lot of help his bad start is could have been very damaging to him.
Friends, it does not take a degree to be able to teach your child. I recommend at least homeschooling from Pre K to 4th Grade. That gives you and your child a bit of experience to make a solid decision. Remember every parent has something to offer in the education of their child.
Homeschooling is a commitment and a covenant between the parents and the child. Yes, the child. He/she has an obligatory role in this commitment too.
As I write this note it is June 9th, 2010. Soon it will be time to start back or begin school. Please take the next few weeks and research, read and communicate with other homeschool parents to be sure you are making the right decision for you and your child.
Friends, there is no reason you cannot or should not consider homeschooling your child. You as a parent are as qualified as anyone to educate your child. You are the only one who can assess your child’s differences and adapt a learning experience to fit their needs.
You as the parent teacher are individually adaptable to create a desire to learn in your child. Don’t let you child be another John. I have several notes and resources you can key into on my blogs and squid pages. Don’t hesitate. Take a look now at what is available for you to make a sound decision.
